Gas cylinders that are used for the industrial sector and domestic purposes are usually flammable gases. These gases, if leaked out of the cylinder, can cause major damage. Hence, these cylinders are labelled for gas safety measures to be taken, as mentioned. There are 4 categories of gases that are transported in the form of gaseous cylinders.

  1. Oxidizing gas
  2. Flammable gas
  3. Toxic gas
  4. Non-flammable and non-toxic

Although this safety guide isn’t comprehensive, it is the basics that all people who are handling hazardous gas should follow.

Oxidizing gas

 Although the gas cannot cause much damage on its own, it needs to be kept away from flames as this gas can ignite the flame of a burner more than usual. Such gas cylinders should not be kept in a science laboratory if used, and one should try their best to keep it away from combustible material.

Flammable gas

Flammable gas used to power the stoves in our house is one of the compounds that catch fire as quickly as possible.  If there is enough flammable gas in the air, even turning on a switch can result in a massive explosion.

Risks in Gas safety

  1. Some gases are colorless and odorless as well; however, as a precautionary measure, the odor is added to gases to sense a leak in the cylinders through the smell.
  2. While handling gas cylinders, do look at the diamond-shaped label of the cylinder and treat it as mentioned.
  3. The gas cylinders are transported with a Safety Data Sheet (SDS). This sheet has all the information about the gas stored inside the cylinders for gas safety.
  4. Do not accept a damaged, unlabeled, or uncapped gas bottle or cylinder.
  5. If the label is damaged or isn’t readable, return the cylinder and demand a new one.
  6. Although gas cylinders can also be identified through the color of the gas bottle, for instance, Red cylinders store hydrogen and black store oxygen. But don’t’ rely on just the color because these things vary from supplier to supplier.
  7. Store gas bottles and cylinders in a place that is boldly labeled with the type of gas and hazard class.

Safely handling gas bottles

The industrial sector utilizes a large amount of natural gas and oil for trade and manufacturing different products. But these things can cause significant damage; hence there are some rules and regulations to ensure gas safety. Here are a few precautionary measures to handle and transport gas bottles.

  1. Don’t drop a gas cylinder on another, also try not to strike one as well.
  2.  While moving gas bottles, make sure that you have replaced the regulator with valve protection.
  3. Carrying a gas cylinder? Don’t’ lift one by the cap as it can be broken or may result in slipping from the hands.
  4. While moving the gas bottles from one place to the other, use a cylinder cart with chains to hold the container in place.
  5. Do not open a gas bottle on your own unless you are authorized to do so.
  6. If the gas bottle is leaking, first close the gap cylinder and then tighten the nut.
